NSW Premier Gladys Berjeklian reported at today's (August 6) media briefing the worst count of positive cases, being 291 from the previous reported cases of 262.

The NSW Premier also foreshadowed that she was expecting case numbers to increase in the coming days.

She said:  "I am expecting higher case numbers in the few days and they just wanted want to be prepared for that."

She also expressed concern over the rising cases in the Canterbury-Bankstown local government area, where enforcement of rules by Police would be undertaken.

"We are seeing too many people frequent certain shopping areas and perhaps not doing the right thing, so police will be more present in the Canterbury-Bankstown local area to ensure compliance and we have to make sure that happens," she added.

The Premier thanked all who came forward to be tested.  In the reporting period, there were 109,547 tests carried out.

One death was reported today - a woman in her 60s, who was not vaccinated, died after contracting the virus at Liverpool Hospital. This is the state's 79th COVID-19 fatality since the beginning of the pandemic and to be the 22nd death linked to the latest Delta outbreak.

Ms Berejiklian said the state's contact tracing team had been boosted by "several hundred" people, including members of the Australian Defence Force.

"If we need further resources we will make sure it happens, but there is no doubt that the more cases you have, the more the challenge."

The eight Sydney LGA's in lockdown are: Blacktown, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Georges River, Liverpool and Parramatta from 30 July to 29 August, 2021.

In the Hunter Region, the LGAs of Newcastle, Cessnock, Dungog, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Port Stephens and Singleton are under restrictions from 5pm yesterday, 5 August 2021 until 12.01am Friday 13 August 2021.
