FLAGCOM & Friends’ participation in the 44th Mardi Gras Parade has drawn much admiration and was featured by the ABC. The parade was held on 5th March 2022, Saturday back in the Sydney Cricket Ground rather than the traditional street parade in observance of COVID 19 protocols. The nation’s biggest night of the LGBTQI+ and friends adopted the theme of “UNITED WE SHINE”.

The stadium crowd was estimated to be 40,000 who cheered on 5,800 marchers from about 160 parade entries. The event highlighting diversity and unity, glitter, celebration, protest and expression of various advocacies was covered by the national ABC TV network.  Before the parade, all present paid respect to Ukraine, the victims of the local floods, and cricket hero Shane Warne.

This year's FLAGCOM’S 12th participation in the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade showcased aspect of Philippine culture and its participants' glitz and glamour.  The ABC did a feature story on FLAGCOM through an interview of its costume designer and huge supporter Rene Rivas and one of Sydney Mardi Gras movers, Travis Conneeley.

Enjoy the video of the interview here.

FLAGCOM won the 2020 Ron Muncaster Award for Best Parade Costume. This year’s costume reflects one of the Philipines’ biggest and popular festival, the Ati Atihan.
