The Filipino Sports, Arts and Recreational Club (FILSPARC) held a small but meaningful event on Saturday, 5th March 2022 to celebrate the International Women’s Day (IWD).  The high tea celebration was attended by fifteen FILSPARC members who are from various walks of life and heritage background.  The event supported the IWD’s theme Break the Bias.

The attendees enjoyed the glass of bubbly or fruit juice upon arrival. This was followed by a variety of beautifully crafted little cakes and sandwiches, downed with coffee or tea.

During the high tea, everyone present spoke and shared their life’s triumphs and challenges. There were stories of achievements which were lauded, as well as the authentic and brave sharing by some who endured and survived domestic violence, bullying and family issues.

The head of the FILSPARC IWD Committee, Len Puzon, expressed her appreciation of everyone’s attendance and participation in sharing their life’s stories. She also offered a quote which reflects what the event means:

Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.”  ~ Maya Angelou ~

There has been very good feedback from everyone who attended the event.  Stefanie Bruzze who is the youngest and non-Filipino background is happy to share her comments.

Lastly, FILSPARC President, Sheila Cantero Raptis summed up the event with her comments:

To be in the company of women celebrating women is a doze of inspiring strength. We all shared a piece of our heart and soul, honouring failures and achievements of our lives that has built strength in who we are today. It is a beautiful moment, when one’s story can lift another, a moment when the voice of courage can be contagious. It is gathering that I look forward to each year, thankful to God for opportunities to inspire and be inspired.

Everyone went away very satisfied by the high tea and inspired by the stories shared by all.  On everyone’s feedback and request, a bigger event is being considered for next year’s event.
