In celebration of International Women's Day - March 8 and in preparation for the establishment of the community organization Kababaihang Rizalista Inc. (KRl), Canberra Chapter, the Philippine Embassy Canberra hosted a virtual orientation seminar and the showing of the critically acclaimed historical-drama-musical film ANG KABABAIHAN NG MALOLOS on 26 March 2022.

The film is based on Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal's Famous letter to the heroic teenaged women of Malolos (Mga Kababayang Dalaga ng Malolos) who defied the reactionary obscurantism of their parish priests in their struggle for enlightenment.

The Ambassador to Australia, Her Excellency Ma Hellen de la Vega, gave the Welcome and Opening Remarks. In her talk, she highlighted the critical historical, social and political issues raised by the film and to reflect on the 2022 theme for International Women's Day "#BreakTheBias".

Before the film showing, Dr Floro Quibuyen, KCR, PhD gave a comprehensive historical background on the events prior to Dr Rizal’s visit to Malolos and meeting the young women of Malolos.  Dr Quibuyen was introduced by Sir Danilo C. Peralta, KGOR Supreme Auditor RY 2021-23 Knights of Rizal Hqs.

The film show was followed by an open forum conducted by Sir Floro Quibuyen to answer questions from the attendees.  The film-forum was an occasion for celebrating acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played progressive roles in the history of their countries and in the building of strong families and resilient communities. In particular, it is a commemoration of the young Filipinas who played an invaluable role in the formation of the Filipino Nation and the advancement of a meaningful and progressive education for all citizens.

This film showing and orientation are a collaboration among the Philippine Embassy in Canberra, Australia; the Knights of Rizal-Sydney Chapter and the pioneering group of women leaders in Canberra in the establishment of KRI.    The event was attended by officers and members of the Knights of Rizal; KRI Sydney and Canberra Chapters; Lady Bernie S Lizardo International President Kababaihang Rizalista Inc., Hqs; Consul Melanie Diano of Consulate General Sydney and other consular staff; and Josephine Quintero from Melbourne who is the great-grandniece of Dr Riza.  Lady Michelle Baltazar, President of KRI Sydney acted as the moderator/host of the online event.
