The Australian National Maritime Museum has announced that following popular demand a panel has been for the National Monument to Migration scheduled to be unveiled in October 2022.  The cut off for registrations for inclusion in the added panel is on August 19, 2022.

At the last unveiling event held during Harmony Week, on March 20 2022, twenty-three migrants who originated from the Philippines were among the 1,200 representing 73 countries, whose names were inscribed on the wall. The Philippines ranked ninth on the countries represented at this event.   Among those from the Fil-Aus community who were known to be in that batch were Australian Filipina editor Michelle Baltazar, lawyer Linda Santos, community leader Emily Rudd and pioneer community leader and champion for the elderly Jose Relunia Sr.   Guests had an appreciation of the Philippine culture with the performance of well-known artist and vocal coach Tina Ranoso Bangel with the accompaniment of Nono Remotigue, well known guitarist.

The National Monument to Migration honours the thousands of migrants who have travelled across the world to call Australia home. Each year, more names are inscribed on the bronze-panelled wall which faces Darling Harbour and Pyrmont Bay – historically the site where many migrants first arrived.

The Monument features over 30,000 names from over 200 countries and for the first time, names from Afghanistan, Gabon, Sierra Leone and Somalia have been inscribed.

More donors are invited to support this initiative where the valuable contributions of migrants to the country are acknowledged on the museum’s website in addition to their names being inscribed on the monument’s wall.   Registration can be made by the individuals wanting to register themselves or a member of their families or friends.  The latter can be as posthumous to pay tribute to the contributions of the deceased persons.  The donation of $500 for the registration is tax deductible.   Further information is available here.

We enjoin kababayans not to miss this opportunity to give back to Australia which is our second home and at the same time to share their stories for the years to come.
