There are plenty of pristine beaches in the Philippines - the Calaguas Islands in Camarines Norte among them.
“Where on earth did you take that picture?” That’s what most people would probably ask you when you show them your photo from Calaguas Islands.
A piece of quiet space is hard to come by these days, and Calaguas in Vinzons, Camarines Norte, is a kind of private paradise you’ll want to keep all to yourself.
Those in the know are familiar with its stunning qualities: crystal-clear waters that gently ripple into different gradients of blue; palm trees that dot the hilly islets; and sand that is finer than Boracay’s — yes, you read that right.

The trip to Calaguas takes time and effort, and you’ll have to brave some waves. But it will be worth it, you’ll see.
There’s also no place for technology here, but you really won’t be missing it. So ditch your iPad and prop up with a spellbinding book instead. Inside a tent you pitched yourself on the shore.
Or explore the other side of the island by walking through the boulders at the far right of the beach. You’ll find a cove with interesting rock formations, coarser sand, and rougher waves.
The friendly locals here are also happy to lend their paddleboats. There are more islands nearby to discover. Just remember to leave nature as peaceful as you found it.
The tranquility of Calaguas is preserved because of the absence of resorts and electricity on the islands. While there are caretakers on the beach and open cottages for rent, it’s best to come prepared with camping gear: tents, sleeping bags, flashlights, and can openers. Live here castaway style. Sunscreen, snorkeling gear, and insect repellent would also come in handy.
Local fishermen often bring in their catch to share with you. As a visitor to their island home, offer a gift of small payment. In return, they’ll come back with grilled seafood, hot soup, and steamed fish to enjoy.

Several local airlines fly between Manila and Naga. From Naga, take a bus or van headed for either Paracale or Panganiban. At the docks, arrange with the boatmen for your transfer to Calaguas.
