Sydney-based Australian-Filipina Dr Cen Amores was last month appointed to the Ministerial Multicultural March Advisory Committee (MMMAC), making her the sole representative of the Filipino community in the group.

The committee aims to provide creative and logistical ideas and support to the Community Relations Commission (CRC) and help make the Multicultural March celebrations a successful event. Membership in this committee is voluntary and will be advisory in nature.

This is the third government appointment received by Dr Amores, founding president of the Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations Inc (APCO), in less than a year.

The NSW government under Barry O’ Farrell appointed her as a member of the MCC in November 2011 and two months later, the Prime Minister Julia Gillard appointed her as one of the People of Australia Ambassadors.

Dr. Amores, who was a full professor of educational    administration in the Philippines, is known for the various community causes that she and her husband Ruben led or initiated.

This includes the multi-awarded Kapit-bahayan Co-operative Ltd that put families to comfortable but very affordable rental accommodations, the Auburn Small Community Organisation Network, which organises the yearly “Flavours of Auburn” traditional food festival and APCO, the umbrella federation of development-oriented and socially-conscious Filipino organisations and individuals.

Thanks Michelle for this beautiful piece. Cen and I are both honoured and fortunate to represent our community, be given opportunities to serve and at the same time help put the Filipinos in mainstream consciousness. We hope others will do the same as Filipinos are naturally multi-talented and civic spirited.
