Two health education resources written in Filipino are among the finalists in the prestigious Multicultural Health Communication Awards to be held next week.

Peter Todaro, director of the NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service (MHCS) this month announced the finalists for this year’s NSW Multicultural Health Communication Awards.

The awards are held every two years and recognise outstanding resources targeting the health needs of multicultural communities.

Among the finalists was a DVD resource about aged care that was translated from English to Filipino. Called the Healthy Older Person’s Safety (HOPS): Home Hazards – A Falls Prevention Tool, the DVD shows how falls by the elderly can be prevented, eliminated, or at the very least, mitigated.

It also explains in Tagalog what home modifications can be done and what adaptive aids can be used to reduce the falls risk in and around the house.

The second resource to be shortlisted was also around aged care and titled, “Get to know the Australian Aged Care System, A Train-the-Trainer Community Training System”.

Due to unfamiliarity with the Australian Aged Care System, many individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds can find it hard to navigate and access the system. This resource is a bilingual communication education program designed to deliver information about these services. It is designed for older people and their carers, with a Filipino version aimed for the Australian-Filipino community.

Todaro said it is important that the efforts of individuals and agencies responsible for the delivery of effective multilingual health resources are applauded.

“They contribute significantly to setting high standards and good practice in making health communication easier.”

The presentation event will be held at the Jubilee Room, NSW State Parliament House on Thursday, 28th July.
